The Moneyologist: My mother-in-law racked up $50,000 in credit-card debt in my husband’s name

Dear Moneyologist,

I am recently married and my husband’s mother opened multiple credit cards in his name without his knowledge. She is a lovely woman, just incredibly fiscally irresponsible and did not know what she was doing was wrong since he is her son. We do not want to press charges for fraud but have been told by several financial managers that pressing charges is the only recourse we have. Is this the case or do we have other options? The debt is in the $50,000 range.

Dear Gerri,

Even if it was one credit card, she knew exactly what she was doing.
