Earnings Outlook: What to watch for in Exxon earnings

Exxon Mobil Corp. is expected to report second-quarter earnings before the bell on Friday.

Exxon XOM, -0.76% is coming fresh from two positive news developments; the discovery of a large oil and gas field off the coast of Guyana, in South America, and a $2.5 billion deal for InterOil Corp., expected to close in September.

Those have gone a long way in allaying concerns about the company’s long-term growth prospects, giving the stock some sparkle e in relation to its peers.

Analysts at Goldman Sachs, which rate Exxon’s stock a buy while rating shares of competitors Chevron Corp.
