MarketWatch First Take: Alphabet’s Google joins rival Facebook in mobile-ad surge

One day after Facebook Inc.’s barn-burner of a second quarter, Alphabet Inc.’s Google business also reported a big boost in revenue from mobile ads, calming investors who were nervous that Facebook was stealing market share, and sending Alphabet shares to new highs.

In addition, Google also relieved investors about another concern: the impact of the lower cost of mobile ads, as mobile has become a bigger part of its revenue. In the second quarter, Google said its overall cost per click fell 7%, compared with a drop of 9% in the previous quarter and a tumble of 11% in the year-ago period.
