Market Snapshot: U.S. stocks struggle for direction as August kicks off

U.S. stock futures pared early gains but remained marginally higher Monday in choppy trade, indicating that August could get off to an uncertain start as oil wrestles with a bear market.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures YMU6, +0.08% were up 23 points, or 0.1%, at 18,385, while S&P 500 futures ESU6, +0.02% added 1.8 points to 2,169. Nasdaq-100 futures NQU6, +0.03% gained 4.25 points to 4,731.

On Friday, the S&P 500 SPX, +0.16% came within a whisker of a record closing high, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.14% booked its best finish in more than a year as Wall Street shook off concerns about sluggish second-quarter domestic growth to finish with tepid gains.
