Airbnb delves into community revitalization with listing in rural Japan

Airbnb is now planning on rebuilding communities, in addition to providing vacation stays.

Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, said Tuesday that he is starting a new design venture within Airbnb, called Samara, which will involve community revitalization efforts. Airbnb is starting the project by designing a home in Yoshino, Japan as a bookable Airbnb listing for the town, which has experienced a declining population.

The town will manage the Airbnb and proceeds will be used to “strengthen the cultural legacy and future of the area.”

Airbnb said it would be monitoring the progress of the listing, which “realizes how architectural features can engender a deeper relationship between hosts and guests,” to see if it wants to expand the model to other rural communities.
