The Margin: Why your company should think twice before tweeting about the Olympics

If your company is not an official Olympic sponsor, don’t even think about using the hashtag #Rio2016.

Or #TeamUSA. Or saying “Go for the gold.” Or posting almost anything on social media that is related in any way to the coming Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. The U.S. Olympic Committee has issued a letter warning businesses not to infringe on their trademarks, and they’re serious.

“Do not create social media posts that are Olympic themed, that feature Olympic trademarks, that contain Games imagery or congratulate Olympic performance unless you are an official sponsor,” the USOC said in a letter in late July.
