Capitol Report: Shhh, don’t tell Donald: Trump is not the first Republican to champion white working class

Donald Trump is not the first Republican to capture the support of working-class whites. He’s not even the first very rich Republican to do so.

Here’s an emerging theme of the 2016 election: The improbable rise of Donald Trump has been fueled by a rapid shift of working-class, economically struggling white men into the Republican ranks.

Only problem is, there’s not much hard evidence to support that.

To be sure, Trump has tapped into the anxieties of whites without college degrees, especially men. He outflanked 15 rivals in a crowded Republican field by dominating among working-class whites, who accounted for about half of all voters in the party’s primaries.
