The Sniff Test: Don’t use these products to protect from the Zika virus

Powerful electromagnetic waves propel mosquitoes out of your home. A bracelet envelopes you in a bug-protection barrier. A vitamin B patch creates an invisible shield straight from your skin.

These products promise protection at a time of heightened concern about the mosquito-borne Zika virus, even explicitly referring to the virus in their online marketing.

Too bad their claims are just that, said Joseph Conlon, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association.

“Before it was a matter of laughable irony, but it could be a matter of life and death now, if you’re using things that just don’t work,” Conlon said.
