Outside the Box: Trump’s alternate reality traps Republicans in his ‘demon-haunted’ world

In his 1995 book, “The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark,” the late astronomer Carl Sagan explained and debunked various myths and superstitions that many people believe, including the notions that UFOs have landed aliens on Earth while abducting human beings, and that Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster are real.

Two central parts of Sagan’s message are one, that people often latch on to bizarre, unsupported claims — and two, we should demand evidence for such claims. Sagan’s “demon-haunted world” refers to the human tendency to seek supernatural or otherworldly explanations for ordinary events — for instance, the belief that unusual behavior or occurrences can be explained by demonic possession or alien abduction.
