Beer Goggles: Hop Valley buy gives MillerCoors local craft beer cred

Craft-beer breweries have something that larger brewers want, but that doesn’t mean big beer is out to acquire every brewery it sees.

In July, Molson Coors Brewing Co. TAP, -0.83% unit Miller Coors announced its second craft beer acquisition in as many years and added Eugene, Ore.-based Hop Valley Brewing Co. to its Tenth and Blake craft beer and import division.

Hop Valley had its debut in Springfield, Ore., in 2009, but grew too large for its 15-barrel capacity and opened a new 60-barrel brewhouse and taproom in Eugene in 2013. That expansion sent its production soaring from 6,700 barrels in 2013 to 38,500 last year.
