Olympic athletes fighting hard for victory in Rio de Janeiro may not pay any attention to commodity prices, but maybe they should. Because the sportsmen and sportswomen in the top positions on the medal platforms will find their accomplishments aren’t nearly as treasured as was the case four years ago — literally speaking.

Since the games in 2012 in London, the prices of gold GCZ6, -0.21% and silver SIU6, -0.34% have slumped 17% and 28%, respectively, shaving off a significant chunk of the intrinsic value of Olympic medals.
