Market Snapshot: Stocks lose grip on records as energy shares stumble

U.S. stocks turned lower Wednesday, retreating from record levels as investors struggled with lackluster corporate results and a downturn in crude-oil prices.

The S&P 500 index SPX, -0.37% fell 9 points, or 0.4% to 2,172, a day after notching an intraday record. A slide in crude prices, following a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration on supplies, hit the energy sector, which was down 1.3%.

Oil futures fell more than 2% after a government report showed crude supplies climbed last week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.28% was off 63 points, or 0.3%, to 18,469, with shares of Exxon Mobil Corp.
