Travel: Only one country spends more on traveling the world than the U.S.

Nobody splashes more cash on travel than the Chinese.

According to government numbers crunched by cost-estimating website HowMuch.net, China spent $164.9 billion on tourism in 2014. That beat out the $145.7 billion spent by U.S. globetrotters and the $106.6 billion spent by the Germans.

The top billing makes sense from a population perspective, considering China is home to about 1.4 billion, more than any other country in the world. And the travel bug could spread there as only about 5% of the Chinese population reportedly have passports. Investment firm CLSA predicts that the number of foreign trips from China will double by 2020 while spending will triple.
