Asia Markets: Asian stocks come out strong after record day for U.S. indexes

Stocks rose sharply across the board in Asia on Friday, catching an updraft from record highs in the U.S. that offset disappointing economic news from China.

The Nikkei Stock Average NIK, +1.10% closed up 1.1% at its highest level since the start of June. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +0.42% ended up 0.4%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HSI, +0.83% was last up 0.9%. South Korea’s Kospi SEU, +0.08% closed 0.1% higher, while Singapore’s Straits Times Index STI, -0.08% closed down 0.2%.

On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.64% , S&P 500 SPX, +0.47% and Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.46% all closed at record levels in the U.S.
