The Wall Street Journal: NYPD say slain Muslim cleric appeared to be targeted

New York City police Sunday were investigating the fatal shooting over the weekend of an imam and a friend shortly after they left an afternoon prayer service at a mosque.

The New York Police Department said its detectives had no indications that Maulama Akonjee, 55 years old, the Sunni imam, and his friend, Thara Uddin, 64, were killed Saturday afternoon because of their faith.

Nevertheless, in a precaution that is customary in New York, police dispatched officers Sunday to keep guard at mosques in the city.

Both the victims were immigrants from Bangladesh, and the shooting occurred in an enclave of Bangladeshi immigrants and their families that has arisen in recent years in the Queens neighborhood of Ozone Park.
