The Wall Street Journal: Odd payment requests detailed in $81 million cyberheist from New York Fed

Fake payment orders submitted by cyberthieves who stole $81 million from Bangladesh’s account at the New York Fed gave a lot of unlikely reasons for needing to pay a handful of individuals large sums of money.

Among them were requests to pay men in the Philippines tens of millions of dollars apiece for things like tuition, forest conservation, subscriptions and entry-level military training.

Details of the payment orders, copies of which were reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, shed more light on a caper that has harmed the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s reputation as a steward of the global financial system and exposed gaps in the process of moving money around the world.
