Capitol Report: John McLaughlin made a lot of predictions — and he was pretty good at them

John McLaughlin, whose death at the age of 89 was announced Tuesday, was known for his bombastic personality and proclivity to make predictions during his rapid-fire roundtable television show.

An examination of the transcripts of “The McLaughlin Group” shows that the onetime speechwriter for President Richard Nixon actually was pretty good with his crystal ball, on issues involving the economy in particular.

This was McLaughlin’s economic forecast for 2016, made for a show broadcast last Christmas: “I predict 2016 will be a year of upheaval and realignment across the world. China’s economy will continue to sputter.
