Jeff Reeves’s Strength in Numbers: Why the clouds will eventually part for solar stocks

It has been a rough road for publicly traded solar-energy players in this cheap energy environment.

The Guggenheim Solar ETF TAN, +1.49% is off more than 55% from its spring 2015 peak, and major players including First Solar Inc. FSLR, -1.19% and SunPower Corp. SPWR, -0.74% are now trading at lows not seen since 2013.

The logic is pretty simple: When oil CLU6, -0.02% is perpetually under $50 and natural gas NGU16, +0.39% is both cheap and abundant, why in the world would costly solar panels be the most attractive energy source?
