The Wall Street Journal: Arson suspect in Northern California wildfire is former firefighter

A man arrested on charges that he allegedly sparked a destructive Northern California fire served time in prison and once worked as a firefighter as part of a program that deploys inmates to fires throughout the state.

Damin Pashilk, 40, of Clearlake, Calif., was arrested Monday afternoon on 17 counts of arson, all of which were related to fires in Lake County, Calif., this past year, including the latest destructive blaze that has destroyed 175 homes and businesses. It was unclear Tuesday if Pashilk had a lawyer.

The current fire, called the Clayton fire, began Saturday evening. Though the flames were aggressive at first, fire officials said Tuesday that they had calmed due to decreased winds and more firefighters on the scene.
