Economic Report: Jobless claims fall 4,000 to one-month low of 262,000

Low jobless claims indicated that layoffs in the U.S. are also very low. Plenty of jobs are also available, government data show.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell by 4,000 to 262,000 to mark a one-month low, a sign the labor market remained healthy in late summer.

Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast initial jobless claims to total a seasonally adjusted 265,000 in the week stretching from Aug. 7 to Aug. 13.

New claims fell below the key 300,000 benchmark in February 2015 and have stayed under that mark for 76 weeks.
