Apple and augmented reality: Where we’re going, we won’t need iPhones

Apple Inc.’s iPhone might be just a bridge to a world in which we no longer need a screen.

Apple AAPL, +0.26% is expected to add more augmented-reality functionality to its flagship product in the coming years to take advantage of what CEO Tim Cook recently called a “great commercial opportunity” in mixed reality, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

Munster said he expects Apple to add incremental features to the iPhone and software enhancements over the next few years that will help developers deliver more augmented-reality use cases through the company’s flagship device. Ultimately, though, roughly five to 10 years down the road, he expects that some sort of wearable, likely glasses or contact lenses, will “replace the majority of screens in our everyday lives.
