A star athlete’s family tragedy became part of the national political conversation Saturday after Donald Trump referenced a woman’s killing to reiterate his case that African-Americans should vote for him.

Trump’s statement came after Dwyane Wade, who this summer signed with his hometown NBA Chicago Bulls after years with the Miami Heat, on Friday saw his cousin Nykea Aldridge shot dead as she pushed one of her children in a stroller. Police said she was not the intended target, according to reports.

“My cousin was killed today in Chicago,” Wade subsequently wrote on Twitter.
