The 21st century’s greatest films form a stark contrast to the highest earners

Audiences and critics aren’t always on the same page. Just because critics deem a film to be one of the greatest works to ever grace the big screen, it doesn’t mean audiences will agree.

BBC Culture last week published a list of the 100 greatest films of the 21st century (2000-present), as picked by 177 film critics from around the world. Editors at BBC Culture were trying to prove that cinema is far from dead. But what critics and academics—people who in theory know more than the average moviegoer—consider the best films the 21st Century has to offer is a far cry from what people spend their cash to see.
