The Margin: Apple just tweeted for the first time. But not really

Apple Inc. activated a long-existing but never used Twitter Inc. account Friday, and just after noon Pacific time, its first “tweet” hyped its expected iPhone debut next week.

So, that’s Apple’s first tweet, right? Not if you go to @Apple’s Twitter timeline.

Apple’s Twitter timeline still stated “@Apple hasn’t tweeted yet” Friday afternoon.

The “tweet” metadata in the TweetDeck twitter-management system showed that it was a Twitter TWTR, +0.26% advertisement, yet the product performs exactly like a tweet in almost every other way except showing up on Apple’s AAPL, +0.94% timeline.
