Ford keeps disrupting its own business

Ford Motor Co. took another move into shared mobility Friday, saying one of its subsidiaries is buying a startup shuttle service in San Francisco and launching a bike-sharing service in several Bay Area municipalities.

Ford Mobility LLC has agreed to buy Chariot, a privately held shuttle service based in San Francisco, for an undisclosed amount.

Chariot will expand to at least five other areas in the next 18 months, Ford F, -2.75% said. Chariot operates on user demand — it opens a new route if enough riders show interest — but in the future will use technology to map the best routes and operate in real time, Ford said.
