Tom Hanks, ‘Sully’ look to top box office as fall movie season takes off

“Sully,” the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic based on the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson,” is expected to top the weekend box office as Hollywood shifts from the summer blockbuster season.

The first weekend following the wrap of the summer movie season isn’t expected to generate much excitement. August and September are typically two of the box office’s dullest months — often referred to as “dump months”— as the industry and audiences wait for the start of November and awards season.

Time Warner Inc.-owned TWX, -2.42% Warner Bros., however, is looking to propel “Sully,” starring Tom Hanks, to the top of the box office and garner solid box-office revenue.
