Tesla makes big tweaks to Autopilot to improve safety

Tesla Motors Inc. announced an upgrade Sunday for its Autopilot feature that could significantly improve the safety if its semi-autonomous driving system.

The key update for Autopilot 8.0 will shift the primary sensors from cameras to radar to help the electric cars “see” better, Tesla TSLA, -1.46% said in a statement. Currently, radar acts in a supporting role to the car’s main camera sensors.

“We’re making much more effective use of radar,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during a news conference Sunday. “It will be a dramatic improvement in the safety of the system done entirely through software.”
