Retail gas-pump prices could spike by as much 20 cents in the Eastern U.S. states hit hardest by a regional pipeline leak, industry officials said.

The pipeline section that failed runs from Mississippi to Atlanta but fuel supply for at least five states could be impacted.

So far, prices are only up a penny or two in the last week in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee, according to pricing changes tracked by AAA.

But pump prices could spike by as much as 15 cents per gallon or more in Georgia and South Carolina, as well as North Carolina and Virginia, in the next week, and up to 20 cents per gallon in South Carolina, according to GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick DeHaan.
