The Wall Street Journal: Bomb outside empty building caused Manhattan explosion

Authorities in New York have determined that a bomb placed outside an empty building under renovation caused the “huge explosion” that rocked Manhattan Saturday night, injuring 29 people, and turning a busy area of the city into a large crime scene.

Investigators are treating the explosion in the Chelsea neighborhood as an “intentional act,” and while they haven’t ruled out terrorism, were trying to determine the motive for picking placing a bomb in front of an empty building on that block, a senior law-enforcement official said.

A sweep of the area led investigators to a second device about four blocks from the explosion site.
