The key ratio to look at as Marriott and Starwood merge their loyalty programs

With Marriott and Starwood completing their megamerger Friday, the two giant hotel operators are disclosing what’s ahead for their most loyal customers.

The key figure for anyone in either company’s loyalty program is this ratio: 3 to 1. That’s the exchange rate for Marriott points to Starwood points.

This illustrates exactly how much more valuable Starwood’s best-in-class loyalty program is.

Marriott MAR, -0.56% — which is acquiring Starwood for $13 billion — is encouraging customers to link their Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest accounts, and it said program members “will be able to transfer points at a three-to-one ratio (three Marriott Rewards points = one SPG Starpoint).
