Airlines and insurers among companies bracing for Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew was barreling toward the Bahamas on Wednesday and was on track to reach Florida by Thursday, forcing a range of companies to take measures to limit the damage from the region’s biggest storm in nearly a decade.

American Airlines canceled flights into airports in 15 cities in the Carolinas and Georgia, as well as eight cities in Florida and eight in the Caribbean, according to an advisory on its website, on concerns about wet, windy conditions, storm surges and flooding. Other airlines were making similar preparations. FlightAware.com, a flight-tracking service, reported 462 flight cancellations Wednesday, and 3,954 delays.
