The Tell: Investors piled into ETFs during Q3

Investors moved an astonishing $92 billion into exchange-traded funds in the third quarter of 2016, one of the highest-ever quarterly totals, according to a report by UBS UBS, +1.95%

At the end of the period between July 1 and Sept. 30, the 1,743 ETFs listed in the U.S. held about $2.4 trillion in assets. So far this year, investors have moved more than $150 billion into ETFs. At this rate, 2016 will be the third straight year that ETFs saw their assets under management increase by more than $200 billion.

Equity ETFs remained the most popular asset class by far, accounting for 76% of assets under management at the end of the quarter.
