Distracted consumers could pause holiday shopping around election, but they’ll come back

The November 8 presidential election and its outcome will distract consumers, but the retail industry believes that shoppers — well-positioned heading into this holiday season — will quickly get back to purchasing gifts after ballots are cast.

“Elections are a distraction, more so when you have a change in the White House,” said Shelley E. Kohan, vice president of retail consulting at RetailNext. “This year, because there’s such a large variability between the candidates, it will be a bigger distraction.”

Cautious shoppers will push pause to scrutinize what the next four years under the leadership of Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump could mean for job stability, but that ultimately won’t spoil their spending across the season.
