Key Words: European Parliament to new 18-year-olds: Happy birthday — now get out of town

The European Parliament is open to the idea of giving every new 18-year-old a free train pass as a birthday gift. The free-train-ticket notion is viewed as an antidote to euroskepticism, according to the website EurActiv, which quotes a German center-right member of the Strasbourg, France, chamber:

‘I am convinced that the 18th birthday InterRail pass for Europe could become a true lighthouse project for the development of a common European identity in diversity.’

Manfred Weber, European People’s Party

Such a program would cost up to €3 billion (about $3.4 billion), according to the Guardian. InterRail one-month passes, the Guardian reports, run up to €479 (or $535).
