Market Snapshot: U.S. stocks slump, weighed by Wal-Mart slide; Twitter tumbles

U.S. stocks on Thursday traded lower, weighed by a decline in shares of Wal-Mart and as investors held off taking sizable risky bets ahead of Friday’s much-anticipated monthly jobs report.

Ahead of that report, Thursday’s weekly jobless claims data, pointed to extremely low levels of layoffs, suggesting that employers are reluctant to part with workers in a tight labor market.

The S&P 500 index SPX, +0.04% was off by 6 points, or 0.3%, to 2,154, 9 of the S&P 500’s main sectors were lower. Health-care and real estate shares were leading losses. Energy shares were the only bright spot, boosted by oil prices trading above $50 a barrel for the first time since June.
