France’s Hollande says EU must take a tough stance over Brexit

The European Union must take a hard line with the U.K. as the country negotiates its exit, French President François Hollande has urged.

Speaking in Paris late Thursday, Hollande said that a firm line is needed as the U.K. plans a clean break from the EU.

“Britain decided to carry out a Brexit — in fact, I believe a ‘hard’ Brexit,” he told dinner guests at the Jaques Delors Institute.

“Well, we have to follow through with Britain’s wishes to leave the European Union, and we have to be firm. If not, we will put the EU’s principles in jeopardy.
