The Wall Street Journal: Hurricane Matthew weakens as it barrels down on Florida

MIAMI—Hurricane Matthew weakened Friday morning to a Category 3 storm and was on a path to cause devastating damage on the Atlantic coast from Florida to South Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center said at 2 a.m. ET that Matthew’s maximum sustained winds were 120 miles an hour, with high winds extending 185 miles out from the center of the storm, which was expected to bring pounding rain and surges to coastal areas.

Florida began feeling Matthew’s front edge around dusk Thursday, with the weather expected to worsen to hurricane-level conditions, according to the hurricane center. Forecasts indicate the eye of the storm would either skirt or pass over the state’s east coast on Friday.
