Capitol Report: Donald Trump is a modern-day Barnburner

The race for the White House is turning into a “barnburner,” but not the kind Republicans had hoped.

Hurt by the controversy over Donald Trump’s “locker room” sex talk and long divided over his candidacy, conservatives might splinter enough to lose the 2016 presidential election and cede full control of Congress to Democrats. The Senate looks in jeopardy and even the GOP House majority is no longer totally safe.

The festering public feud among Republicans is unusual but not exactly unprecedented in American politics. One of the earliest examples of party civil war involved the so-called Barnburners, a New York political movement whose high- and low-water mark culminated in the 1848 presidential election.
