The Wall Street Journal: U.S. bans Samsung Note 7 phones on airplanes

U.S. officials said Samsung Electronics Co. Galaxy Note 7 cellphones will be banned from airline flights from noon ET on Saturday.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s move comes just days after authorities expanded their guidance on the troubled Samsung 005930, +1.28% phones to include replacement models that had also been flagged as a potential fire risk.

Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement that passengers who try to carry the phones onto flights could have them confiscated and face fines or prosecution.

Some airline officials said staff wouldn’t be checking what kind of devices passengers had on board and would rely in part on the ban being self-enforced.
