Germany to Tesla: Don’t use the term ‘Autopilot’ in ads

The German government wants Tesla Motors Inc. to stop using the term “Autopilot” in its advertising, claiming the word is misleading and potentially dangerous.

Germany’s Transportation Ministry confirmed it asked Tesla TSLA, -1.86% to change the wording, according to a report Sunday by Reuters. “In order to prevent misunderstanding and incorrect customers’ expectations, we demand that the misleading term Autopilot is no longer used in advertising the system,” the ministry said in a letter, Reuters reported.

On Friday, Germany’s Federal Motor Authority sent letters to Tesla owners warning them to use extreme caution with the Autopilot feature, which it has called a “considerable traffic hazard” by lulling drivers into a false sense of security.
