Currencies: Dollar holds gains ahead of data, Fed speech

The dollar maintained its weekend gains against the yen during Asia trade on Monday.

The greenback USDJPY, -0.07% was changing hands at ¥104.12 after touching as high as ¥104.40 earlier in the session. The U.S. currency was at ¥104.16 late Friday in New York.

The greenback had fallen below ¥104.00 in mid-morning trade after upbeat U.S. retail sales data for September on Friday bolstered investors’ expectations for the Federal Reserve’s rate increase later this year. But the U.S. currency later ratcheted up, and stayed above the ¥104.00 mark for the rest of the session despite a lack of fresh trading cues.
