London Markets: FTSE 100 loses ground with miners mixed, Pearson dropping

U.K. stocks fell Monday, with Pearson PLC shares falling by the most in a month following financial results.

The FTSE 100 UKX, -0.86% fell 0.5% to 6,975.29. All sectors were showing losses, except for the basic materials group. Even there, mining shares were mixed, with Glencore PLC GLEN, +1.31% up 1.6% and Rio Tinto PLC RIO, +0.00%RIO, -0.13%RIO, -0.84% up 0.7%.

But Randgold Resources PLC RRS, -0.37% and Fresnillo PLC FRES, -1.23% were down 0.3% and 0.9%, respectively, as dollar-denominated precious metals prices GCZ6, -0.14% pulled back.
