The Wall Street Journal: Cleveland in the World Series for first time since 1997

TORONTO — The Cleveland Indians clinched their first American League pennant since 1997 and moved one step closer to their first World Series championship since 1948.

And they did it on the shoulders of an untested rookie pitcher, Ryan Merritt, who was making his first career postseason start.

Showing no nerves but terrific control, Merritt stymied Toronto’s best hitters as the Indians defeated the Blue Jays 3-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 48,800 at the Rogers Centre to take the best-of-seven American League Championship Series 4-1.
