By this measure, buying a home is the best deal it’s been in years

Could 2016 be the best year to buy since 2012?

That’s the conclusion of a new analysis released Thursday from real-estate firm Trulia, which compared the costs to rent with the costs of buying a home. It is now 37.7% cheaper to buy than to rent in the top 100 cities in America — the cheapest it’s been since 2012, when it was 40.7% cheaper, the data revealed.

Trulia’s analysis compared the monthly costs of owning — including mortgage payments, maintenance, insurance and taxes — to those for renting comparable properties. It factored in such things as closing costs, down payments, security deposits, rent appreciation, renter’s insurance and more.
