Asia Markets: Asian stocks dip as Japan hit by weak economic data

Asia’s main equity markets were lower early Monday, with disappointing trade data from Japan and a slightly stronger yen putting a cap on local shares.

The Nikkei Stock Average NIK, +0.25% was down 0.1% in early trade. Across the region, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, -0.53% was down 0.7%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HSI, +0.31% was down 0.2%, reopening after being shut on Friday due to Typhoon Haima. Meanwhile, Korea’s Kospi SEU, +0.43% was up 0.5%.

Data released Monday by Japan’s Ministry of Finance showed exports falling 6.9% in September from a year earlier, in the 12th consecutive month of declines as the stronger yen continued to hurt manufacturers.
