Most retailers would benefit from staying closed on Thanksgiving Day

In an effort to squeeze every dollar out of the holiday shopping season, sales associates and other retail workers cut short their Thanksgiving dinners in order to get the doors open for bargain hunters. However, there are very few retailers that gain from a Thanksgiving opening.

“We doubt that the majority of specialty retailers benefit from involvement in this annual Thanksgiving opening arms race,” Moody’s Investors Service wrote in a note published Thursday. “Toys R Us and Best Buy Co. Inc. BBY, -0.35% , which we consider specialty retailers, are likely the only ones that could make a case for being open before midnight on Thanksgiving night, and even that might be a push.
