The Balance: Halloween spending will be even higher this year — have a good costume or risk social media shaming

Now that all the back-to-school pictures that made you feel like a bad parent have receded from your Facebook FB, +0.78% news feed — I should have made that “First day of second grade” sign! — it’s time to prepare for the next round of celebration to stoke your inferiority complex: Halloween.

Between candy, costumes, decorations and activities, U.S. shoppers surveyed by the National Retail Federation are expected to spend $82.93 on Halloween, up from $74.34 last year, and total spending is projected to hit $8.4 billion, up from $6.9 billion last year, and an all-time high in the survey’s 11-year history.
