Alphabet presses pause on Google Fiber expansion

Alphabet Inc. is largely pulling the plug on its high-speed fiber internet expansion, as it likely pivots to cheaper wireless delivery methods.

In a blog post Tuesday, Craig Barratt, CEO of Alphabet’s Access — which operates Google Fiber — said that new rollouts will be “paused,” announced layoffs and said he will step down, though he will remain with Alphabet in an advisory role.

Barrett wrote that to “stay ahead of the curve,” Alphabet’s GOOG, -0.67%GOOGL, -0.86% newly refined plan “enhances our focus on new technology and deployment methods to make superfast internet more abundant than it is today.
