American Air 767 aborted takeoff in Chicago due to engine issues

An American Airlines Group Inc. Boeing 767 bound for Miami aborted its takeoff from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Friday afternoon because of “an engine-related mechanical issue,” the carrier said.

A fire developed on the crippled airliner, Flight 383, and the Chicago Fire Department was dispatched to put it out, according to a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. Thick black smoke was visible coming from the plane, but an American AAL, +0.38% spokeswoman said the fire is now extinguished.

The 161 passengers and nine crew members deplaned on emergency chutes and American said buses were sent to take them back to the terminal.
