Netflix’s new show ‘The Crown’ ushers in a new era of content spending

Netflix Inc. has entered a new age.

“The Crown” is launching on the service Friday Nov. 4. The 10-episode series is the streaming giant’s most expensive to date. Produced by Sony Pictures’ UK-based production company, Left Bank Pictures, it racked up a reported $130 million in production costs.

“The Crown” follows the British royal family and its parliament in the second half of the 20th century. At $13 million per episode, on average, “The Crown” is right up there with the most expensive TV show ever, which, according to Statista data, was “ER,” which also cost $13 million an episode.
